Annual Requirements for Certified Kentucky Paralegals

To maintain their certification in good standing, Certified Kentucky Paralegals must comply with CLE requirements for each calendar year and maintain continuous membership in the Kentucky Paralegal Association. 

Important Deadlines for Current Certified Kentucky Paralegals

  • CLEs for the 2024 calendar year must be earned by December 31, 2024 
  • CLEs for the 2024 calendar year must be reported by January 31, 2025 
  • Membership renewal for the 2025 calendar year, including payment of dues, must be completed by January 31, 2025
  • Requests for Extensions for Compliance must be submitted to KPACC by January 31, 2025

Annual CLE Requirement

 

A Certified Kentucky Paralegal must earn a minimum of 8 credits of KPACC Approved CLE Activity annually, which must include 2 CLE Ethics credits

      • CLEs for each calendar year must be earned by December 31.
      • CLEs for each calendar year must be reported by January 31.
      • CLEs must be submitted on the KPACC Approved CLE Certificate of Attendance form and must include supporting documentation from the CLE sponsor verifying credit eligibility and completion of credit(s).
      • CLEs must be submitted by email directly to certification@kypa.org.

Annual Membership Requirement

A Certified Kentucky Paralegal must be a member of the Kentucky Paralegal Association and maintain continuous membership  

  • CKPs must be KPA members and renew membership annually.
  • The membership renewal deadline is January 31 each year. 
  • Membership requirements include paying dues, fees, fines or other monies. 
  • New CKPs who are not yet KPA members must complete a KPA membership application within 45 days of notification of CKP exam results.

    Q:  How do I maintain my certification in good standing?

    A:  CKPs must follow all program requirements found in the Certification Policy. CKPs are encouraged to stay up to date regarding all responsibilities outlined in the Certification Program Policy.

    Q:  Where do I report my CLE credits?

    A:  CLE credits are to be reported directly to KPACC on a Continuing Legal Education (CLE) Certificate of Attendance Form. The form and supporting documentation must be emailed directly to certification@kypa.org. 

    Q:  What supporting documentation is required when I submit CLE credits earned for activity conducted by a KPACC-approved sponsor? 

    A:  If activity was sponsored by a KPACC-approved sponsor listed under Section 9.02(A)(1) of the policy, you must submit the KPACC CLE Form and 1) the certificate of attendance issued to you by the sponsor or 2) other documentation verifying your completion of credit(s) and showing credit hour(s) eligibility or the time (minutes) duration of the activity. 

    Q:  What supporting documentation is required when I submit CLE credits earned for activity conducted by a sponsor that is not a KPACC-approved sponsor? 

    A:  If the activity was sponsored by a provider other than one of the KPACC-approved sponsors, you must submit the KPACC CLE Form and 1) the certificate of attendance issued to you by the sponsor or 2) other documentation verifying your completion of credit(s) and showing credit hour(s) eligibility or the time (minutes) duration of the activity and 3) the seminar brochure, outline or agenda, or program materials provided by sponsor.

    Q:  Can I see my CLE credit balance on the website? 

    A:  No. Not at this time. However, some major updates are in the works to bring CLE balances and submission to the digital age. Stay tuned! In the meantime, you may contact KPACC to verify if our CLE totals match your records. 

    Q:  May I carry over excess CLE credits? 

    A:  Yes. Carry over credits are outlined in Section 9.01(G) of the Certification Program Policy

    Q:  I won't be able to complete the required CLE credits by the end of the year. May I request an extension? 

    A:  Yes. Extension requests for completing credits are outlined in Section 9 of the Certification Program Policy. The required form can be found here.

    Q:  I won't be able to complete the membership requirement by the specified time. May I request an extension?
